Terms of Service

By using Where Is This Place (the 'site'), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site. The site is offered free of charge, without an account system, and on an 'as is' basis.

These terms are written to be readable. They do not replace legal advice, and nothing in them limits rights that mandatory law in your jurisdiction gives you.

You may only upload images you own or have the right to process. You remain the owner of everything you upload; the site claims no license over your photos beyond processing them for the request you initiated.

You are responsible for what you do with results. Locating a scene is analysis; using a location to harass, stalk, threaten, trespass or otherwise harm a person is abuse of this tool and may be unlawful wherever you and the subject are. We prohibit such use.

GPS metadata results are read from the file as stored. Metadata can be edited, copied or synthesized before it ever reaches you, so a metadata location is evidence of file content, not a certified fact about where a photo was taken.

AI visual geolocation results are estimates. Confidence tiers describe the model's internal certainty, not real-world accuracy. No result on this site — metadata or AI — constitutes proof of location, authorship, date or ownership, and none may be presented as such in legal, journalistic or commercial contexts without independent corroboration.

Capture dates shown by the date finder are the timestamps stored in the file, which cameras write according to their own (sometimes wrong) clocks and editing software can rewrite.

Do not use the site to process images of private individuals without a lawful, legitimate basis; to identify private residences with intent to intrude; to attempt to defeat the anti-abuse protections; or to make automated, high-volume calls to the AI analysis endpoint. We rate-limit and reserve the right to refuse service for abuse.

The supported formats are JPEG, PNG and WebP up to 10 MB. Other formats may fail, and that failure is by design, not a defect.

The site relies on third parties — the visual geolocation provider, map and geocoding services, and abuse prevention — each operating under its own terms and privacy policy. Their availability is outside our control, and their terms govern their part of the pipeline.

The site is not affiliated with Google, OpenStreetMap, Geoapify, GeoSeer or Picarta. Any product names belong to their owners. Specific behaviour that is always out of scope: warrant-style location requests, bulk reverse geocoding through the page UI, and any attempt to resell access to the analysis endpoint.

The site and its results are provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the site's operators are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for decisions made in reliance on tool output.

If mandatory consumer law in your country grants you rights that conflict with this section, those rights prevail.

We may update these terms as the site evolves; material changes will be reflected by an updated date alongside the document. Questions and objections can be sent to support@whereisthisplace.world.

The site's name, text, design and code belong to their authors and are protected accordingly. You retain all rights in photos you process. Nothing here grants a license to redistribute the site's content as your own, and nothing you upload transfers any right in your photos to us beyond the momentary processing you requested.

We may add, change, suspend or remove any feature, provider or the whole service, at any time, including the AI analysis (whose availability also depends on third-party providers). Free tools carry no uptime commitment. Material changes to these terms will be published with an updated date; continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

Metadata viewer: output reflects the file as parsed; exotic or deliberately corrupted files may parse differently elsewhere. Date finder: stored timestamps record the camera's belief, not verified chronology. Metadata remover: the verification re-scan covers the sensitive field families listed on the tool page; exotic metadata outside those families is out of scope. Location finder: AI candidates are estimates and are not suitable as sole evidence in legal, journalistic or safety-critical decisions.

These terms are intended to be enforceable to the extent permitted by law; if any clause is unenforceable in your jurisdiction, the remainder survives. Disputes should first be raised by email so they can be resolved informally. Nothing here overrides mandatory consumer-protection law where you live.

Acceptable: locating your own photos, verifying where a legitimately received picture was taken, research and journalism with appropriate care, teaching and learning the methods. Not acceptable: resolving a private home from a stranger's photo, tracking an individual's movements, building a dossier on a person, processing images you have no right to hold, or reselling automated access to the AI analysis.

You may stop using the site at any moment — there is no account to close. We may block abusive traffic (rate limits, automated scraping, attempts to bypass Turnstile) without notice. Nothing in termination limits the disclaimers that by their nature survive.
